Welcome to Silvertop! We hope you enjoy the cozy fireplace in the living room. For your convenience, wood is supplied at the end of the building or in the woodshed near the chalet entrance.

To help you get the best heat from the fire and to prevent any accidents, please read the following information on how to correctly light the fire and keep it burning at the optimum level.

1. Open the Damper:

    • Make sure the damper is open – it should be in the horizontal position. The fire door will not open unless the damper is in this position. See Image 1.

2. Open the Air Slide:

    • Slide the Air Slide at the bottom of the fireplace to the left. See Image 2.

3. Prepare and Light the Fire:

  • Place some paper and kindling along with one firelighter into the center of the firebox.
  • Light the fire and close the door, leaving the damper and air slide open. This will provide enough air circulation to get the fire started and also ensure any smoke is evacuated up the flue.

Important Safety Note:

    • Never use volatile substances such as methylated spirits, gasoline, or solvents. Only use fire starters to help start the fire.

4. Add Larger Timber:

    • As the fire begins to burn through the kindling, use the heatproof glove provided to open the door (make sure the damper is open in the horizontal position) and add larger pieces of timber.
    • Close the door and, once the fire is burning well, close the damper and the air slide.
    • When more timber is needed, open the damper and add the wood.

5. Correct Use and Loading:

    • Correct use of the fire is essential. Incorrect or excessive loading of fuel can overfire the firebox and cause irreparable damage. Ensure a maximum fuel load not exceeding 1/3 of the firebox volume.
    • Keeping the fire load to 1/3 of the firebox size also creates the best heat output as air is able to circulate well through the firebox. See Image 3.

6. Managing Ash:

    • If using the fire over several hours or days, check the ash pan at the bottom of the fireplace when the fire is at its lowest. This usually means first thing in the morning before you light the first fire of the day.
    • Use the glove provided if the ash pan is still warm. Take the ash pan outside and tip the contents into the firepit at the rear of the house.

We hope these instructions help you enjoy a warm and safe stay at Silvertop. If you have any questions or need assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us.

This allows you to enjoy a crackling fire outside while helping us maintain the natural beauty of our surroundings. As you enjoy the communal fire pit, we kindly ask that you ensure the fire is completely out before retiring for the night. This helps us maintain a safe environment for everyone.

We hope you create wonderful memories around the fire and have a relaxing and enjoyable stay!
